Our Corporate Social Responsibility
As a
brewery no-one can pretend that what we do is particularly serious or even that
important. We can’t claim to be of great social and political importance, we
can’t even claim to be absolutely vital. We produce a product that is enjoyable
and lubricates the social world.
What we can and do is try to give back a little to help those less fortunate than ourselves and our customers. We can also work very hard to reduce our carbon footprint and make ourselves as environmentally friendly as possible. We do these things in many ways:-
- We give an automatic discount of 10% off our normal pricing to any charity that we feel is worthwhile. (That’s most of them.)
- Battledown Brewery has for four years sponsored the Friends of the Samaritans - Cheltenham Beer Festival.
- We lend support to the Young Enterprise Scheme (through Balcarras School), with both theoretical and practical assistance.
- Wherever possible we source our ingredients locally, at present that’s over 90% of all materials we use.
- Any ‘waste products’ that we
produce are actually not waste at all……..
- The spent malt grain that is left after the brewing process is picked up by local farmers and used as feed stuff for livestock.
- The spent hops are bagged up and left for pick up by local gardeners, (spent hops make a wonderful mulch for the allotment).
- We will provide outside bars for charity events, supporting them by contributing an agreed slice of our turnover.
- We are constantly working on reducing energy consumption and looking at ways to recycle the energy we do use.
- As members of the Gloucestershire Craft Brewers we work with seven other similar local
breweries to share ideas and practical help so that we may all improve our
products, working methods and at the same time promote Gloucestershire
beers thus reducing ‘Beer Miles’.
